“As we honour his legacy today, let us remember Ved Bhasin not just as a journalist but as a beacon of hope for countless individuals, who continue to fight for their rights and dignity. His spirit of resilience and advocacy for justice serve as an inspiration for all of us.”

Raja Muzaffar*

On the 9th death anniversary of Ved Bhasin’s passing, our hearts are imbued with both sorrow and gratitude.

It has been years since he left this world on November 5, 2015, yet his spirit endures, echoing through our memories and inspiring us to carry forward the ideals he championed. Ved Ji, as we affectionately called him, was not just a friend; he was a guiding light, a wellspring of knowledge, and a relentless advocate for justice, peace, and human rights.

Ved Bhasin was a titan in the realm of journalism, a voice that resonated with clarity and conviction. He was widely recognized as one of the foremost experts on Kashmir, a title he earned through decades of dedicated work, unparalleled integrity, and a profound understanding of the region’s complex history.

His insights into the Kashmir conflict, particularly his poignant recounting of the 1947 massacre in Jammu, opened our eyes to the deep-seated issues faced by the people of Kashmir. He was an educator at heart, generously sharing his wealth of knowledge with anyone, who sought to understand the intricacies of this troubled land.

In our personal lives, Ved Ji’s warmth and kindness were unwavering. I remember the joy he brought to our family during his visits to the United States. He had a special place in his heart for my daughter, showering her with the same love and affection he had for his daughters. Those moments spent together, filled with laughter and rich conversations, are memories I will cherish forever.

Ved Bhasin’s contributions to journalism extended far beyond reporting. He was a stalwart and defender of truth, bringing to light the signing of the death warrant of JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat – an act that was kept shrouded in secrecy at the time. His courage to unveil such a critical moment in history showcased not only his commitment to transparency but also his unyielding dedication to the lofty principles of journalism.

His leadership roles, including as President of the Jammu & Kashmir Students Union and the J&K Youth National Conference, reflected his deep commitment to the youth and future of Kashmir. Ved Ji envisioned a world where aspirations could flourish, free from the shackles of injustice, and he worked tirelessly to make that vision a reality.

As we honour his legacy today, let us remember Ved Bhasin not just as a journalist but as a beacon of hope for countless individuals, who continue to fight for their rights and dignity. His spirit of resilience and advocacy for justice serve as an inspiration for all of us.

Though he is no longer with us in body, Ved Ji’s impact remains indelible. His voice continues to resonate in the hearts of those, who were fortunate enough to know him and in the countless lives he touched through his work. He taught us the importance of standing up for what is right, speaking out against injustice, and fostering understanding among diverse communities.

On this anniversary of his passing, let us commit ourselves to carrying forward his legacy. Let us strive to advocate peace, empathy, and justice in our own lives, just as he was. Let us share the stories he imparted to us, ensuring that the history of Kashmir and its people is honored and understood.

Ved Bhasin will forever remain in our hearts, a symbol of integrity, compassion, and dedication. We miss his laughter, his wisdom, and his unwavering friendship. But we take comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on in the values he instilled in us and the ongoing pursuit of truth and justice he so fervently championed.

Rest in peace, dear Ved Ji. Your light continues to guide us, and your memory will always be cherished.
